The Pogue Gallery in the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center at East Central University is hosting an exhibit of works by Tulsa artists Bob and Sandy Sober on weekdays through Oct. 28. The gallery also will be open from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday [OCT. 9] for Homecoming.
The Blue Meanie toy based on the Beatles鈥 鈥淵ellow Submarine鈥 movie is the inspiration for this painting by Tulsa artist Bob Sober. Sober鈥檚 Yellow Submarine paintings and paintings by his wife, Sandy Sober, are on exhibit through Oct. 28 at the Pogue Gallery in the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center at East Central University.
Bob Sober鈥檚 work is derived from 鈥淵ellow Submarine鈥 toys that were manufactured by McFarlane Toys in 2000. The Beatles鈥 movie was a big influence on Sober.
鈥淚 rented it (鈥淵ellow Submarine鈥) over and over again, insisting that my two young sons experience the wonderful colors, creative characters and, of course, the Beatles music,鈥 he said.
Eventually the toys became the subjects of Sober鈥檚 paintings which are enlarged to 20 times the toys鈥 original size to better appreciate the colors and details.
Sober is joined in the exhibit by his wife Sandy.
Her work is 鈥渞ealistic and almost always explores long shadows and high contrast,鈥 she said. She likes shadows because they lend themselves to perspective.
Both artists use bright vibrant colors, yet retain their individuality.
The gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free.
