ADA, Okla. – East Central University alumnus, Steve Johnson, is set to be honored at ³ÉÈËBվ’s Evening of Honors and Recognition, May 1 at 6 p.m. in the ³ÉÈËBÕ¾ Foundation Hall, located inside the Chickasaw Business & Conference Center.

A 1986 graduate of Ardmore High School, Johnson earned his degree from ³ÉÈËBÕ¾ in 1991 on a full band scholarship, performing in the marching band, jazz band and concert band. His time at ³ÉÈËBÕ¾ not only shaped his career in music education but also introduced him to his wife of 37 years, Betty, whom he met at the ³ÉÈËBÕ¾ Church of Christ Bible Chair.

Following graduation, Johnson began a remarkable 32-year career in public education. He taught one year in Tipton, Okla. (grades 1–12), three years in Wilson (grades 5–12), and 28 years in Seminole (grades 4–12). Under his leadership, Seminole bands consistently earned Superior and Excellent ratings at marching and concert contests. His programs also provided students with memorable performance opportunities and travel experiences to destinations such as Branson, Worlds of Fun, Fiesta Texas, Disney World and Graceland.

Over the years of teaching students in grades 4–12, Johnson built lasting relationships with his students, so much so that several later asked him to officiate their weddings, a testament to the profound impact he had on their lives.

Throughout his career, Johnson was instrumental in mentoring young musicians, helping more than 30 students earn scholarships to participate in the ³ÉÈËBÕ¾ Marching Band. . In recognition of his dedication and impact, he was named Seminole Teacher of the Year in 2023. He retired from full-time teaching in May 2023 but continues to serve the Seminole School District part-time in lawn maintenance, a reflection of his commitment to the community he served for nearly three decades.

Johnson and his wife are proud parents of two daughters. Amanda, a 2015 ³ÉÈËBÕ¾ graduate in English Education, and her husband Will, a 2016 ³ÉÈËBÕ¾ graduate in Criminal Justice, met while participating in the ³ÉÈËBÕ¾ band. Their daughter Stephanie and her husband Tanner are also part of the Johnson family legacy, along with grandson Wesley, age six.

The Johnson family’s connection to ³ÉÈËBÕ¾ runs deep. Betty also graduated in 1989 with a degree in Elementary Education. Numerous extended family members are also ³ÉÈËBÕ¾ alumni, including his brother-in-law Ron (bachelor’s and two master’s degrees), sister-in-law Robin (elementary education degree and master’s degree), a nephew and niece-in-law, as well as an uncle and aunt who attended ³ÉÈËBÕ¾.

Steve Johnson’s lifelong dedication to music education, his mentorship of generations of students, and his deep and lasting ties to ³ÉÈËBÕ¾ exemplify the spirit of the Distinguished Alumni Award.
